BC-543 dikembangkan sekitar tahun 1943. Namun, mesin ini tidak didasarkan pada C-52, tetapi pada BC-38 yang hampir identik dengan M-209 waktu perang. BC-543 sebenarnya secara fungsional identik dengan BC-38 dan M-209 dan hanya berbeda dalam detail manufaktur kecil.

Salah satu perbedaan paling jelas dengan BC-38 adalah tidak adanya resistor geser besar tepat di belakang roda sandi yang digunakan untuk mengatur tegangan listrik antara 110 dan 220 Volt. Pada BC-543 sudah terprogram dan dapat diganti dengan steker pemilih tegangan internal.

Mesin Sandi ini merupakan buatan Swedia; dibuat di Kota Stockholm mulai tahun 1930 dan pernah digunakan oleh Belanda. BC-543 diserahkan kepada Indonesia setelah KMB pada tahun 1949. Mesin ini adalah salah satu dari lima jenis mesin yang diserahkan oleh pihak intelijen Belanda, NEFIS.

The BC-543 was developed around 1943. However, it was based not on the C-52, but on the BC-38 which was almost identical to M-209 times of war. BC-543 was actually functionally identical to BC-38 and M-209 and only differed in minor manufacturing details.

One of the most obvious differences with BC-38 is the absence of large sliding resistors right behind the cipher wheel used to set up electrical tension between 110 and 220 Volts. The BC-543 was pre-programmed and could be replaced with internal voltage selector plug.

 The cipher machine was made in Swedish, in the city of Stockholm, beginning in 1930 and once used by the Dutch. The BC-543 was handed over to Indonesia after the Roundtable Conference in 1949. This machine was one of five types of machines handed over by Dutch intelligence agency, NEFIS.
